Description

The CR-1 Smart Charger was designed to give train enthusiasts the ability to charge and operate your battery-powered engine right from your box-car, gondola, coal hopper, or tender.  One of the best features of the CR-1 is its ability to charge multiple battery chemistries (NiCd, Nimh, Lithium-Ion, Polymer & Prismatic) all from one charger.

On the side of the CR-1 is a single charge LED indicator.  When the LED turns Red, your battery is being charged.  When the LED turns Green, this means your battery is fully charged and is in the stand-by mode and shut-off. If you are charging a lithium battery-packs, it will take 3—5 cycles (charge/discharge) before the your battery is at its full capacity. The CR-1 was designed to charge Nickel-Cadmium, Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries from 7.2V—18V and Lithium-Ion, Polymer & Prismatic batteries from 7.4V—22.2V. Charging a non-designated battery such a Lead-Acid or Zinc will damage the charger.

On the backside of your CR-1 you will see a slide panel lid, (just like your TV remote) push down on the arrow and slide the lid open. You will see a row of nine dip switches. These nine dip-switches are individual selector’s switches that you will turn-on or off depending on the voltage and chemistry of your battery-pack. For example: If you have an 18V Nimh battery-pack you would select dip-switch #9.  If you have a 14.8V Lithium-Ion battery you would select dip-switch #3.

This is very important:  You must select the correct Dip-Switch that corresponds to your batteries voltage & chemistry, selecting the wrong dip-switch (ie: 18V Nickel charging an 18.5V lithium battery) will cause damage to your battery.  Only turn on one dip-switch at a time.

Lithium Battery Warning:  When charging your lithium batteries you should always remain inconstant observation to monitor the charging process and react to potential problems if they occur.  Never charge a lithium battery-pack with a non-specified charger.  Never charge a lithium battery-pack with a nickel charger.  A lithium battery-pack always charges “Cold.”  If at any time you witness a battery starting to balloon, swell-up, smoke or get hot, discontinue the charging process immediately, disconnect the battery from the charger and observe it in a safe place outside of your home, garage, or building.
